"Here is a "proof" that y = 0:

Define f(x,y) := (x+y)^2.
Now substitute x = u-v, and y=u+v. Taking partial derivatives, we see that

f/x = f/y = 2(x+y)


x/v = -1


y/v = +1


Now the Chain Rule implies

f/v = (f/x)(x/v) + (f/y)(y/v) = 2(x+y)(-1) + 2(x+y)(1) = 0

But the definition of f(u, v) = (u + v)^2 implies also that f/v = 2(u+v) = 2y.
Therefore y = 0.

Thus we should never divide by variables named "y" while manipulating equations, because y = 0. "
